Lazy Afternoons @ Fresh Pressery Café (Lavelle Road)

I’m always on the lookout for wonderful little spaces that serve as an oasis from the hustle and bustle of our dear burgeoning city. Located on the Lavelle Road offshoot in the erstwhile space occupied by Cinnamon and now the GoodEarth store, is the very welcoming Fresh Pressery Café. An extension of the cold pressed chain – Fresh Pressery’s ideology, the café caters to all those health nuts that like their food and drink – light and healthy.

Granite tables and benches are interspersed with waterbodies, sun umbrellas and frangipani shrubs – merrily sitting under the shade of trees that are remnants of old Bangalore. Blackboard menus announcing healthy chocolate mousse and gluten free brownies and a self-serve fridge with cold pressed juice, add to the guilt-free vibe. The rest of the compound is home to the eclectic GoodEarth store, the Rolling Pin Bakery and a Chocolatier. All in all, a wonderful space to enjoy an afternoon out with the girls…or the boys.

The menu decidedly veers onto the healthier side. So ordering here should be easy-breezy for the calorie conscious. Of course there are always exceptions, like my dear friend who chose to start the day with a Pineapple, Coconut, Oatmeal and Banana Smoothie! When a place like this has their specialty cold pressed juices on offer, I would probably stick to that rather than overdose on one calorie bomb of a drink. My favourite out of the line-up is the Capple (Carrot, Apple, Ginger) or if I’m feeling particularly holy I’ll try the Green Flush (Doodhi, Spinach, Celery, Cucumber, Ginger and Lemon). The Black Magic comes with activated Charcoal, alkaline water, lime and honey – who doesn’t want a toxin flushing super drink?!

The Salmon Rolls here are quite the draw for me. Smoked Salmon stuffed with cream cheese and capers, drizzled with olive oil and dill. Very simple and very delicious. They also have an Arabic Platter with beetroot hummus, cucumber and dill yogurt and traditional hummus served with toasted lavash.

The Mains and Sandwiches are only available for lunch and dinner, so if you like us, came in at the witching hour of 3 PM, you will need to contend yourself with the salads, smoothies and desserts. Luckily the salads here are all the rage and I don’t see anyone being disappointed. The Grilled Fig Salad with Arugula, caramelized walnuts and crumbled Blue Cheese will always be my favorite. They are generous with their figs here and the arugula is dressed with a tangy-sweet vinaigrette that just brings the leaves to life.

The asian inspired Cambodian Prawn Salad has juicy boiled prawns and raw papaya and peanuts in a spicy dressing. I only wish they used a lighter hand with the ice berg lettuce, as it took away from the sharp flavors that papaya salads are famous for.

The Healthy Quinoa Burrito Bowl is a bit of a misnomer. A) it comes on a plate and B) there is no Burrito! But if there’s a super healthy meal to be had here – it probably is this. A deconstructed bowl of Beans, Quinoa, Guacamole, Salsa and pickles – the diet gods will definitely be proud of you.

The heartiest of the Salads was obviously created by a Punjabi for a Punjabi. (I only jest!). Don’t let the name take you aback, the Tandoori Chicken Salad is super delicious and checks all the boxes of being supremely healthy as well. Double marinated tandoori chicken or paneer served on a bed of iceberg lettuce and rocket with red onions and peppers in a pomegranate dressing. Bring on the salad life I say!

They have five delicious mains including a Traditional Roast Chicken and a Norwegian Seared Salmon. Or go carb heavy with a Three Cheese Grilled Sandwich or a protein packed Avocado and Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Desserts include some healthy items like a Coconut Milk Chia seed Pudding or grilled Pears with sugar free ice cream. But they also have a rich Peanut Butter Open Sandwich and a decadent Chocolate Cake. If you just want to go the whole hog try the Chunky Monkey Smoothie – chocolate, bananas, almond milk and sea salt!

Fresh Pressery wins for a beautiful setting and a healthy menu with punchy flavours. It also helps that the service is ever so charming. Perfect for a lazy afternoon! Don’t forget to get a book along, they don’t mind you lingering.
