Masala Fried Fish for rasam rice and other world problems

Yes, I know what you’re thinking. A recipe for Masala Fried Fish?? I mean, how basic right?! You chuck some chili and turmeric paste and deep fry the fish and it’s done. Fini. Like honestly, why even bother listing it here. But I have, because we make this at home very often and it’s used as a bait to eat the rasam rice. It’s part of the family repertoire of quick fix meals when all we want to do is put our legs up and chill or in most cases, order in some greasy Chinese.

Rim Naam has a new Mistress of Spice (The Oberoi, MG Road)

I am always struck by absolute disbelief when I step into the serene restaurant by the water – ‘Rim Naam’. Considering The Oberoi is located on the bustling M.G.Road, this oasis of beauty and calm is a treat for the senses. Cross over the plush gardens, step into the faux rock cave and gently tip toe your way over the bridge into a wooden structure reminiscent of river restaurants in Thailand. Why, the little gurgling waterfall and the spectacular Koi in the water body surrounding it, will definitely make you feel that way. Rim Naam has been synonymous with fine dining in Bangalore – there is no other place that offers such an enchanting ambience coupled with equally enchanting food. The restaurant has a new mistress of Spice all the way from the Isaan province in Thailand. If that’s not cause for celebration, I don’t know what is?!

Kosha Mangsho – Bengali Mutton Curry

I am generally not encouraged to whip up Indian delicacies in my kitchen. According to my husband, the dishes pale in comparison to the ones his mom and my mom make. (#pissed). Praise for my Indian recipes (from him) are few and far between, so I have given up trying to fight the matriarchy bias and slowly relegated myself to cooking other cuisines when he’s around. There are a few things however, that he has warmed up to over the years we’ve been together – my excellent Nimbu Dal, killer Andhra Chilli Chicken, Spicy Mangalore Chicken Ghee Roast and the decadent Kosha Mangsho. In this domain he has unabashedly crowned me Queen Bee. It’s not that his opinion on my kitchen skills matter a whole lot – it’s just that I’m super competitive and I like to win…at everything. If that means sneakily perfecting a few dishes that leave no room for competition – then so be it!

North-East Culinary Adventure @ Curry & Things (Frazer Town)

Bangalore is birthing restaurants almost every day because our craze for novelty is insatiable. Being the cosmopolitan city it is, diverse influences from all the people who call it home, has made it the most exciting city on the culinary map of India. People here are willing to experiment with their food and that is the single biggest factor supporting restaurants that specialize in novel cuisine – be it Korean, Japanese, Bengali, Chettinad, Vietnamese or Persian!
